Scope of Works

Gabions are used for erosion control structures. They also stabilize steep slopes and help to prevent erosion.

Gabions - what are they?

Gabions are wire mesh baskets compactly filled with rocks, properly wired together for construction of erosion control structures and to stabilize steep slopes and prevent erosion.

Most of us are familiar with the beautiful use of gabions as stabilization of cuttings through mountain passes, but the practical applications for gabions are vast.  These rock-filled baskets are often used as retaining walls for highly erosive materials, bridge abutments and outlet aprons.

Gabions offer an eco-friendly solution for shore and beach protection.  A recent and on-going Marracon project along the Hartenbos beach (between the Hartenbos River and Bayview) demonstrates how effective gabions protect sand dunes against the onslaught of the sea at high tide and the erosive forces of storm water during heavy rainfalls.

Gabions built by Marracon are an eco-friendly solution for shore and beach protection.Other uses include the prevention of erosion of dam overflow channels, storm water canals and catchment areas around bridges.  Construction of this nature most typically includes “mattresses”, a flat gabion basket used to prevent the erosion of the river bed or canal floor.

Marracon has experienced teams who pack the baskets by hand with an artistic flair that turns this construction product into an aesthetically pleasing solution as well.
